Hoa Hao

A millenarian Buddhist sect that emerged in the western Mekong Delta in the late 1930s. During the early 1950s the Hòa Hảo, along with the Cao Đài and the Bình Xuyên, formed private armies that opposed the leadership of Ngo Dinh Diem. Hoa Hao forces were eventually split; some members of the Hoa Hao joined the National Liberation Front, and others rallied to the South Vietnamese military after Diem’s death.
